Farms add dust and fertilizer spray. Apartment and commercial lanes add road grit kicked up by every car. Spec sheets matter, but so does how a weatherproof gate operator and camera are mounted and powered. Ask installers where condensate drains and how they seal field terminations. Those details decide whether the system lasts through the first wet winter.
Read the IP rating
Look for outdoor ratings suited to rain and splash, not indoor shells under a shallow eave. A reader on an open pedestal needs a tougher rating than one under a covered porte-cochère. CAPXS voice intercom keypads and other pedestals need sealed outdoor housings too. License plate reader (LPR) cameras need the same outdoor sealing plus a clear, dry view of the plate through rain and night glare. Cable glands and sealed conduit entries count as much as the number on the box.
Temperature, power, and brand duty
Check operating temperature for operators, batteries, and cameras. Battery backup that sits in a metal box in August behaves differently than the same pack in a shaded enclosure. Farms on Ghost Controls with solar at a remote gate need panels and controllers rated for heat and wet seasons. LiftMaster commercial and HOA lanes need enclosures that survive curb heat and constant cycles. HySecurity high-security installs still fail if condensate sits on boards all summer. LPR housings fog and misread when seals fail, so treat them like any other outdoor camera, not a specialty gadget immune to weather.
Mounting beats marketing
Even a rugged camera fails pointed into floodlights or where a mower throws rock. LPR needs a controlled approach angle and lighting more than a pretty mount. Use drip loops on cable entries. Keep operator electronics off standing water. Protect apartment and HOA pedestals from curb strikes. After install, rinse lenses and check seals seasonally.
